When asked why I have chosen this path for my career, I smile and casually reply, “What other job would pay me to travel, shop and color?”

As the response is usually a laugh, I do feel there is so much more to Interior Design. When I started my endeavor in the program at Texas State, I was so amazed that the major was everything I expected it to be and nothing I expected it to be.

I am Jennifer Rodriguez and I set out on this Interior Design adventure in the fall of 2002.

I took an Introduction to Interior Design class as an elective in high school. There I learned how I could capture my creativity and visually express the pent up artistic creations I had lodged in my head. However, after deciding to turn that passion into a hobby, I pursued my interest in research and helping people with a biology pre-medicine degree at what is now Texas State University. Finally, realizing that a career is something to enjoy everyday and determining that happiness was greater than any monetary compensation, I rediscovered my passion for interior design. The fall semester of my senior year I took “the path less taken” and changed my major.

I soon learned of Healthcare Design, and like a beacon of light, discovered my future. Incorporating my passion of helping people, my background of extensive research in biology and psychology, and the enthusiasm for creating functional, well-designed spaces, Healthcare Design encompasses everything that I am and want to do with my life.

Having transferred from Texas State University in my second junior semester of the Interior Design curriculum, I have already completed many of the essential design classes. This includes all basic level design courses, technology, drafting and the art required for the bachelors degree. To further educate myself in the industry, I am currently employed with The Home Depot in the Design Center, where I continue to help customers and designers with décor choices and have volunteered at numerous Habitat for Humanity construction sites. I have also volunteered at hospitals (Methodist in Houston and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta), not only to give my time to those in need but to also surround myself with the atmosphere of healthcare facilities, in which I hope one day to take part in the design.

I can bring the dedication needed for the Georgia State University Design Program. It has been a long road getting to this point, in which I am still persevering through. I have learned the fundamentals and applications of Interior Design at Texas State and want to continue my education and start my career. I know Georgia State is the best place to give me the foundation to accomplish my future goals.
